In literature class ,we are taking the story: A Visit To Grandmother by William Melvin Kelley. The characters in this story are presented directly and indirectly. The direct characterization is when the writer tells readers exactly what a character is like; GL, Charles brother, is directly characterized when he is mentioned as " part con man, part practical joker, and part Don Juan". Grandmother who's also directly characterized," she looked like a doll, made of black straw, the wrinkles in her face running in one direction like the head of a broom. Her hair was white and coarse and grew out straight from her head. Her eyes were brown and hidden behind thick glasses, which remained somehow on a tiny nose". Indirect characterization is when the character's traits are revealed through dialogue, the character's actions and thoughts, and the effect the character has on others. An example of indirect characterization is Chig who was revealed through the story as polite, good mannered, well raised, and an upbringing boy. Another example is grandmother although she was directly revealed she was also indirectly characterized that she had a poor eyesight that she couldn't differentiate her son (Charles) from her grandson (Chig).
